Teknomadic's Guide to Mexico

Mexico tops the list for digital nomads and party people alike.

Mexico is an incredibly diverse country that is as culturally rich, as it is geographically diverse. Renowned for its cuisine throughout the world, Mexico is an ideal destination for digital nomads. Add to that the country's reputation for fiesta, and you've got one of the top countries on Teknomadic's list.

THe LowDown on Mexico

Language

Spanish is the official language of Mexico. However, there are many native languages still spoken, including Mayan. While English is fairly commonly spoken in tourist hotspots, it's still a wise move to learn a few phrases in Spanish to help you get by.

Climate

Mexico is a large country with a very diverse climate, ranging from lush tropics, to vast deserts. The country has a huge range of coastal territory, leaving no shortage of beaches to explore. No matter where you go, it's likely to be hot and humid.

Currency

Mexican pesos are the official currency, but US dollars are often accepted in touristy zones. My recommendation is to convert your currency to pesos, and use cash when possible. ATM access drops off outside of the most touristy areas, so be prepared.

Internet Access

Internet access is fairly solid in most cities. Most hotels and Airbnbs will have a solid internet collection, with faster speeds available in larger population areas. However, internet reliability drops off outside of tourist zones. Mobile internet is rather expensive. Be sure to purchase a local SIM with a data package for backup.

Food

There's more to Mexico than just tacos. Mexico is a foodie's paradise! There is an incredible variety of delicious food that is unique to each region. My personal favorite dish? A Yucatan specialty called cochinita pibil, a flavorful dish of roast pork, marinated in the achiote pepper.

Cost of Living

Whether you're looking for simple accommodations, or a private beach bungalow, Mexico has something for every budget. Private rooms can be had for as little as $25/night. While Mexico is still relatively cheap, an increase in overall tourism has begun to drive prices higher than pre-pandemic.
