Teknomadic's Guide to Myanmar

A visit to Myanmar is like stepping back in time.

Like many other Southeast Asian countries, the country formerly known as Burma, is caught between the struggles of its past, and the hope for a brighter future. While less developed in tourism and infrastructure, Myanmar can be a challenge for digital nomads, but the rewards are undoubtedly worth the risk.

THE LOWDOWN ON MYANMAR

Language

The official language spoken in Myanmar is Burmese. As a former British colony, English is often spoken in larger cities. Rural areas rarely see westerners, and Burmese is likely to be the only language spoken.

Climate

Myanmar's climate is varied, ranging from tropical in the south and along the coastline, to a dryer central plains, and mountainous northern region. Temperatures are high year round, with monsoons May to October.

Cost of living

As in many Southeast Asian countries, cost of living is quite cheap. Myanmar is cheaper than neighboring Thailand, and daily necessities won't set you back too much.

Internet Access

Internet access is poor throughout the country. Only about 1% of the country has home internet access. Wireless phone data is becoming common place, and is your best bet to stay connected as a digital nomad.

Food

Unlike its Southeast Asian contemporaries, Myanmar is not exactly known for its food. Local food is cheap, but you'll probably want to eat more international food. Indian food is common due to the country's proximity.

Currency

Myanmar's currency is called the Burmese kyat (pronounced like "chat" in English). As of 2023, $1 USD is equal to 2,100 kyat. ATMs are widespread in large cities, but are less common in rural areas.
