THE LOWDOWN ON CAMBODIA

Language

Khmer is the official language spoken. Other Asian languages, particularly Chinese, are also spoken. English is not very common, so be sure to download a translator app or pack a phrase book with you.

Climate

Cambodia has a very tropical climate, heavily influenced by the monsoons. Its wet season is stretches from May to October, with the dry season November to April. The country can be particularly hot from March to May, with temps exceeding 95 Fahrenheit.

Currency

Cambodia's official currency is called the Riel. Its not particularly strong, with 1 USD equal to approximately 4,115 Riel. That makes it a good destination for nomads looking to stretch their budget. Cash is king, don't expect too many places to accept credit cards.

Food

Cambodian food may not be quite as well known as its neighbors, but you can still find some interesting dishes to try. Two dishes worth trying are the national dish, fish amok, and nom banh chok, a savory noodle dish with a green curry sauce.

Cost of Living

The cost of living is low in Cambodia, making it a great stop for nomads. Private stays are very reasonable, and of course, there are some more upscale options in cities like Siem Reap. Hostels are very cheap and nomad friendly.

Internet Access

Internet access is a bit lacking, compared to it's neighbor Thailand. Wifi in hotels and Airbnbs should be adequate for most usages, but Zoom calls run the risk of being dropped. Be sure to pickup a local SIM card and a data package just in case.
